How a roof works

Water only ever does one thing: it runs downhill. A roof is a set of lines that tell it where to go.

Most leaks start where one line meets another: a chimney, a wall, a valley, a vent. That is where the crew looks first.

Roof replacement

A new roof from the deck up: the old layers off, the deck checked, new underlayment, shingles or metal, flashing, vents and ridge.

  • Age and condition of the shingles or panels
  • The deck: soft spots, rot, sagging
  • Ventilation in the attic

02 · The slopes

Roof repair

One problem fixed properly: a leak traced to where it starts, shingles replaced, a boot or vent resealed, a soft spot opened up and made sound.

  • Where the water really gets in
  • Shingles, nails and seals around the spot
  • The deck under the damage

03 · Chimney, walls, valleys

Flashing & chimneys

The metal at every joint, where most leaks begin: chimneys, sidewalls, skylights and valleys, in steel, aluminum or copper.

  • Step and counter-flashing at the chimney
  • Sidewall and headwall joints
  • Valley metal and the shingles beside it

04 · After wind and hail

Storm damage inspection

After high wind or hail: every slope, the ridge, vents, gutters and the attic looked at, with photos of what was found.

  • Lifted, creased or missing shingles
  • Hail marks and granule loss
  • Dents on vents, gutters and downspouts

05 · The eaves

Gutters

Gutters and downspouts sized for the roof above them, sloped to their outlets and carrying the water away from the foundation.

  • Size against the roof area
  • Slope, hangers and seams
  • Downspout count and where the water goes

06 · The walls

Siding

The walls under the roof: siding repaired or replaced, with the trim, soffit and the joints between wall and roof finished to keep water out.

  • Loose, cracked or warped pieces
  • Soft wood at the bottom of walls
  • Where the roof meets the wall

After a storm

Look from the ground. Leave the ladder in the garage.

Five things anyone can check from the yard and the attic once the weather has passed.

Request a storm inspection The full storm checklist

  1. 1

    Walk the yard

Look at each roof slope from the ground, and for shingle pieces or cap tabs in the grass.

  2. 2

    Check the gutters

Granules, shingle bits or dents in the gutters and downspouts after hail.

  3. 3

    Look at the metal

Vents, flashing and pipe boots that look bent, lifted or dented.

  4. 4

    Look inside

Ceilings and the attic, for new stains or drips over the next few rains.

  5. 5

    Take dated photos

From the yard, before anything is moved or cleaned up.

Questions

Good to know before anyone climbs a ladder.

Not answered here? Call (317) 555-0167 during opening hours.

Repair or a new roof: how do I know?

It depends on the age of the roof, how much of it is affected and the deck underneath. The crew looks, then explains both options in plain words so you can decide.

Should I climb up and look myself?

Please do not. Roofs are steep and slippery, more so when wet. Photos from the yard, a window or the attic are enough to start a request.

How much does a roof cost?

Roof prices come from the size and pitch of the roof, the material and what is found underneath, so there are no prices on this site. Request an inspection and ask the crew about your roof.

What happens after a storm?

Storm damage inspection is on the services list: every slope, the ridge, vents, gutters and the attic, with photos of what was found. Dated photos you take from the ground help.

Do you work on metal roofs?

Yes. Standing-seam metal is one of the roof choices, alongside architectural asphalt shingles.

Can I send photos?

Yes. The request has an optional photo step. In this sample the photos stay on your device and only the number of photos is sent.

Do you do gutters and siding too?

Yes. Gutters and siding are on the services list, along with the trim and the joints where the walls meet the roof.
